Overdentures, also known as implant supported dentures or “snap-on” dentures, are a type of removable denture used to replace missing teeth. They provide a secure, comfortable solution for anyone who is missing all of their upper or lower teeth. As an implant specialist, Dr. Castaño may recommend implant supported dentures for someone who has extensive bone loss, making a traditional denture more difficult to wear.
What Are Overdentures?
Overdentures are removable dentures that are secured on top of two to four dental implants. The implants act as anchors, providing stability and preventing movement of the overdenture. A special attachment is then used to secure the overdenture in place, allowing it to snap on or clip in, depending on the type of locator there is.
Overdentures are typically more stable than traditional dentures, allowing for a more secure and comfortable fit with improved speaking and chewing abilities. Because they clip onto dental implants, there’s no need for messy denture adhesives.
Like traditional dentures, you’ll want to remove your implant supported dentures each night and for home care. We recommend soaking your prosthesis overnight and cleaning your gum tissues and implants at least twice a day with a soft toothbrush.
Benefits Of Implant Supported Dentures
In some cases, it may even be possible to retrofit a newer denture to clip onto dental implants.
Working with our board-certified implant specialist is a good way to ensure the best results from your implant-secured prosthesis.
Who Is A Candidate For Implant Supported Dentures?
An ideal candidate for snap-on dentures is someone who has a healthy smile but limited bone height or width, making it more challenging to wear a conventional denture. Since bone resorption (shrinkage) can impact how well a denture seals against the gum tissue, traditional dentures may slip, create sore spots, or feel painful to wear. Adding 2-4 implants helps eliminate this movement by providing a base for the overdenture to clip onto, regardless of the extent of bone loss.
Some candidates are people who have already worn dentures for several years, while others are looking for a more economical choice over permanent All-on-4 implant treatments.
With proper care and maintenance, implant-supported overdentures can last for many years.
Struggling With Dentures?
An implant-supported denture option could be the best choice. There are certain criteria to meet before getting these implants. To ensure a comprehensive plan and treatment recommendations, you'll need a thorough examination. During this visit, we will take x-rays and a 3D CT scan which will allow us to evaluate all of your oral tissues and create a personalized care plan, as well as provide a variety of payment options to choose from. With this detailed information, you can feel confident about taking the next steps in restoring your smile.
