Why It’s Important To Treat Gum Disease

Untreated gum disease, when chronic, can statistically raise your chances of heart attack, stroke, pneumonia, unmanaged diabetes, infertility, and numerous other health conditions. By addressing the infection inside of your mouth, Dr. Castaño can help you boost your immunity and your body’s ability to better manage co-existing medical conditions.

Gum Disease Stages:

Gum disease happens in stages and if not addressed it can become irreversible.

Types Of Gum Disease Treatment

Dependent on the stage of gum disease and a patient's specific needs, Dr. Castaño will choose which type treatment is best. We provide laser gum surgery, traditional gum surgery and scaling and planing.

Laser Gum Surgery

Gum disease can cause inflammation and infection in the gums and soft tissue. To treat gum disease, our Denville periodontist may use lasers to remove diseased tissue and bacteria. Lasers can also help reshape the gum line and create a healthier margin that’s easier to maintain between checkups. Laser gum surgery is a minimally invasive procedure that can reduce discomfort and healing time compared to traditional surgical methods. It also sterilizes the area being treated, reducing the risk of infection. By incorporating laser therapy, our patients can achieve healthier, stronger gums more quickly.

Traditional Gum Surgery

Periodontal surgery may be necessary for someone with advanced gum disease (also known as periodontitis.) Our periodontist is a specialist who performs these procedures to help reduce the amount of damage to the teeth and gums, reducing your risk of tooth loss.

Surgery may involve retracting the tissues for the removal of plaque, tartar, or diseased tissue. It can also involve reshaping the gums and bone around the teeth, performing pocket reduction, and even regeneration of damaged bone and tissue. Gum surgery can help restore your gums to a healthy state, making them less prone to further infection.

Deep Cleaning With Scaling & Planing

Unlike a traditional preventative cleaning, a deep cleaning goes deeper into the pockets of the gums and removes the bacteria, plaque, and calculus that cause inflammation and gum disease.

During a deep cleaning, we will first administer a local anesthetic to keep you comfortable. Then special instruments are used to remove plaque, tartar, and bacteria from above and below the gums. This helps to establish a healthy oral environment so that we can work to reduce the depth of pockets around diseased teeth.

A deep cleaning is important because it helps to prevent further tissue and bone loss from occurring. Because oral bacteria can also spread through the bloodstream, this treatment reduces the number of bacterial colonies under your gums to protect your smile as well as your overall wellness.
